MEET THE PASTOR
A Q&A with the Reverend Matthew D. Randolph
By Annie Ritsch
Would you rather…
(Pick one of the two selections you would rather do)
Star Wars... While I love the utopian dream for earth that Star Trek holds and their more realistic technological outlook, the epic nature of Star Wars has and will always win me over. Plus Star Wars has one of my childhood heroes… Darth Vader, who Gavin has also adopted as a hero, by the way (I guess the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree!)… I mean, who doesn’t love a dark Lord of the Sith, right?!?
Read a paperback book or read from a Kindle/Nook/E-Reader?
Actually, I prefer a hardback to all other options. However, I guess it also depends on the type of book. If it is for my personal theological library, then I want a hardback at all cost (unless a paperback is the only option). For a novel or something to read for pleasure, I still prefer a hardback. However, every once in a while, I’ll find myself purchasing something from iBooks. I own an enhanced electronic version of J.R.R. Tolkien’s, “The Hobbit.” It actually has audio built into it of Tolkien himself singing dwarf and goblin songs… how cool is that?!?!? (I know, I know… I just geeked out right there.)
Go to a play or a musical?
A play… I enjoy drama, whether it is a play or a musical. However if I had to pick one, it would probably be a play. I think the reason is because as much as I like musicals, there can be a point for me where a musical to becomes too musical (please don’t hate me, musical people). If it reaches that point, sometimes I feel it can take away from the overall story. I just love a good story (fiction or nonfiction). Stacie on the other hand, I feel would choose a musical. She and her mom love going to Broadway shows.
Hike or Bike?
Hike… I like to bike. We are especially looking forward to biking the rail-to-trail just above E-town with the boys. However, I love to hike. I enjoy backpacking and just getting out on some sort of adventure. Now that we are back in Pennsylvania, I am looking forward to getting out on the trails more often.
Watch TV or read a book?
If I were to speak from my heart, I would say, “Read a book.” I am a huge Tolkien nut, and I also love a good historical fiction or narrative history. However, I think that because my profession involves so much reading and study, I generally find myself watching a good drama series on Netflix. It just allows me to unwind at the end of the day. I do enjoy a good laugh too. Right now, both Stacie and I like the comedy sitcom, “The Goldbergs.” I spent my childhood in the 1980’s and partially in the Philadelphia area, so that show just cracks me up.
Camp in an RV or stay in a tent?
Stay in a tent… I guess this answer goes back to my love of hiking and getting deeper into the “woods.” I thoroughly used to enjoy backpacking, and therefore would be inclined to the tent. Now, with that said, Stacie is totally an RV person. The more amenities that are available to her, the better. She does not share my love for rustic living!
Swim in a pool or in the ocean?
Ha! Here is another one where Stacie and I will differ. I am an ocean guy. Maybe it is all the years that my family has gathered together in Cape Hatteras, but I love the ocean. Don’t get me wrong, I gladly hang out with my wife poolside. But if I have a choice between the two, give me the salt.
Win the lottery or find your perfect job?
The perfect job, which I found! (wink, wink)… In all seriousness, I believe that it is so much better to find the perfect job than to come into some sort of windfall. I believe it is all about fulfillment, and I don’t believe money can ever achieve such a thing. The more people have the more people seem to want. I would rather have a job that gives me purpose, allows me to serve my neighbors, and helps me be who God intends me to be. A windfall of money cannot give me what those job attributes could ever achieve. I would be lying if I didn’t say that I hold so much hope for all of that in God’s call for me here at Donegal!
Watch sports or play sports?
As I am sitting here with two skinned knees from playing softball, I guess I’ll say, “Playing sports.” I do enjoy playing sports. I grew up playing soccer, baseball, and hockey. From junior high school through college, I think ice hockey is all I ever played. But now I am finding myself ever coming back to baseball. I am so excited to be able to play with the Acorns again (even though I still have some rust to knock off!). And with the boys showing interest in the game, it is something that I can share with them. However I do like to watch sports as well, especially live. For me, there is not a whole lot more right in this world than sitting along a baseline at Camden Yards or some local minor league park with a hotdog and cold drink in my hand. Then there is Beaver Stadium… Oh boy… “Let’s Go State!”
Play dodgeball or kickball?
Oh, totally dodgeball… I’m an old hockey player, remember?!?
This was fun. Thank you!!!
